After over 10 years in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration as a designer of ductwork and equipment sizing using Heat Pumps in the United States. #1.) Your temperature region has a huge effect on how to size the equipment regarding tonnage. #2.) Building structure, position and insulation are the next biggest factors. Heat load calculations based on many variables will help to size your equipment more efficiently. Also, insulation in the building, sealing of gaps in framing, sealing the ductwork itself, these are many variables to consider that will help improve the efficiency of the unit. Once installed, regular maintenance is required to keep your unit operational and free of algae buildup in the summer which can cause water leaks from your condensate water pan under the evaporator. Heat Pumps will only heat to about 25° Fahrenheit or 0° Celsius at that point you need a back up resource for heating. Heat Pumps work from the ambient heat in the air which warms the refrigerant to produce heat. If there is no heat outside it will not produce heat inside. That is why only southern regions of the USA and the world should only consider Heat Pumps in the Southern regions closer towards the southern regions in the Northern Hemisphere to the sub tropics regions.
